Selling a piece

If you decide to sell, I act for you

Knowing what something is worth and getting that for it are different jobs.

An auction room, a dealer and a private buyer will each pay a different figure for the same piece, and the right route depends on what it is. I find that route and handle the sale on your behalf, whether it is one ring from a drawer or the jewellery from an estate.

What I do

An honest view first

What it should realistically make, where, and how long that is likely to take. If it is not worth selling, or you would be better keeping it, I will say so.

The right route

Auction in Dublin, London or further afield, a specialist dealer, or a private buyer. The choice is made on what suits the piece, and you approve it before anything moves.

Presented properly

I photograph and describe the piece myself, and arrange a laboratory report where a stone deserves one. A good description is often the difference between two estimates.

Handled to the end

Reserves, terms, delivery and settlement. You know where the piece is and what has been agreed at every stage, and nothing is sold without your say.

What it costs

I work on commission, a percentage of the sale price agreed in writing before I start. Where I have a working relationship with the auction house or dealer I recommend, I tell you.

A valuation and a sale are kept apart. Where I have valued a piece for probate or for dividing an estate, the report is finished and delivered before selling is discussed, and only if you raise it. The figure on a valuation and the figure a piece sells for are not the same.

Ask about selling

Tell me what you have, with a photograph if you can, and I will come back with a view on whether and where to sell it.
